Fieberkontrolle bei Babys und Kindern

Febrile seizures in children – what to do in an emergency?

Fever in babies and children unsettles many parents, but it's usually a completely normal immune response. It's important to know when a fever begins, how to properly monitor your temperature, and when a doctor's visit is necessary. Here you'll find practical tips for restful nights and greater security in everyday life.

Febrile seizures are a shocking moment for parents: suddenly the child twitches, loses consciousness, and seems dazed. But the good news is that in most cases, febrile seizures are harmless and stop on their own after a few minutes. The crucial thing is to recognize them and react calmly.

What is a febrile seizure?

A febrile seizure is a reaction of the nervous system when the fever rises very rapidly. Typical signs include:
• Twitching of arms and legs
• Rolling eyes
• Stiff or flaccid limbs
• Brief loss of consciousness
👉 A simple febrile seizure usually only lasts a few minutes and ends on its own.

Who is affected?

Febrile seizures occur primarily in children between 6 months and 4 years of age.
Common triggers: infections or, in rare cases, vaccination reactions. The crucial factor is not the height of the fever, but how quickly the temperature rises.

What to do in an emergency?

1. Stay calm and don't leave the child alone
2. Lay child flat on the floor, secure the surroundings.
3. If necessary, remove a layer of clothing, keeping your mouth and nose uncovered.
4. Do not give anything to drink or eat (risk of suffocation)
5. Observe the duration (note the time)
6. Always call emergency services (112) after the first febrile seizure.
⚠️ If the cramp lasts longer than 5 minutes or recurs, seek medical help immediately.
